How To Use Essential Oils Topically For Allergy Treatment

Denise Moore

There are a number of different home remedies you can try for treating allergy symptoms; however, using essential oils topically can bring relief for the symptoms you are experiencing. Before you begin using essential oils for this, it is important to find out how to use them and which ones to use. Here are some tips as you try this method for allergy treatment.

How to use essential oils topically

Essential oils are natural, yet they are highly concentrated. Using them properly is vital when you use them on your body. Using essential oils topically means that you will place them on your skin. Before doing this, you should test an area of your body with the oil. If it irritates your skin, you will need to dilute the oil with a carrier oil.

Carrier oils are neutral oils that are completely natural, but do not irritate skin at all. By diluting a regular essential oil with a carrier oil, the mixture will be gentle enough for your skin.

There are numerous oils you can use topically; however, you might want to begin by trying lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus oils. These oils can be applied topically, but each type is strong. Because of this, you may want to plan on using a carrier oil to begin with. Sweet almond oil and coconut oil are both good types of carriers to use for this purpose.

Here are some options for using these oils topically:

  • Lavender oil – Place a drop of this on your sinuses and rub it in. The smell of lavender is soothing, yet it is also helpful for reducing inflammation.
  • Peppermint oil – Place a drop on the base of your neck and rub it in. Another option is to rub this oil under your nostrils. The smell of peppermint oil is also soothing and strong enough to help clear the mucus from your nose.
  • Eucalyptus – Massage the oil onto your chest to help with the congestion you have. Even if other areas of your skin can handle this oil, you must dilute it when placing it by your nose because it can damage your nasal tissue.

Essential oils can be very helpful if used properly, but if you are still having allergy problems, you may want to make an appointment with a doctor for assistance. Allergy doctors like those at the Asthma and Allergy Clinic may offer various types of treatment options, including medication and sinus surgery for chronic allergy-sufferers.

About Me
Working Together: Holistic and Traditional Combinations That Work

I am one of those people who hates going to the doctor. In the past, I have relied on everything from cranberry juice to apple cider vinegar to fix my ails. As I get older though, I find that I need to rely more on traditional medicine than I did in the past. What I found out from my doctor is that I did not have to give up the holistic medicines I used. I could combine them. This blog is designed to help others focus on how to combing holistic treatments with traditional medicine in a safe and fun way.
