3 Tips To Help A Parent Adjust To Living In A Nursing Home

Denise Moore

The time your parent needs to adjust to moving from his or her home to a nursing home can vary. It could be weeks or longer before your parent is comfortable in the new environment. To help your parent adjust quicker, there are some things you can do.

Create a Familiar Environment

Even though the space that your parent has in the nursing home might be limited, it is important to bring a sense of familiarity to the new resident. One way to do this is to bring along familiar objects that your mother or father possesses.

For instance, if space allows it, take along an area rug and favorite chair to the nursing home. You can also take special items from his or her bedroom, such as a cherished nightstand or bookcase so that when he or she wakes up, those familiar items are the first thing seen.

Hire a Private Caregiver

Being in a nursing home facility does not mean that your parent cannot receive additional assistance from an experienced home care provider. There are many services that a provider can give.

For instance, if your parent has a terminal illness, you can have providers around the clock in the room to attend to your parent's needs. The provider can also serve as your eyes and ears when you are not there. He or she can report back whether or not your parent is receiving the attention needed by the nursing home staff.

A provider can also be essential if your parent has dementia. There are many safety concerns for a parent with dementia, such as wandering. The provider can ensure that your parent is not left alone and attended to at all times.

Maintain Communications

It is important that you and your family maintain communications with your parent. In addition to visiting on a regular basis, ensure that family members are making calls and sending letters. If your parent uses email, encourage everyone to send emails on a regular basis. This can be very convenient for younger family members.

A great way to ensure that you are making regular calls and visits to your parent is to schedule them ahead of time. Treat the calls and visits just as you would any other appointment that you cannot miss.

Moving into a nursing home does not have to be a bad experience. With the help of loved ones and professional help, your parent can adjust within a reasonable amount of time.

About Me
Working Together: Holistic and Traditional Combinations That Work

I am one of those people who hates going to the doctor. In the past, I have relied on everything from cranberry juice to apple cider vinegar to fix my ails. As I get older though, I find that I need to rely more on traditional medicine than I did in the past. What I found out from my doctor is that I did not have to give up the holistic medicines I used. I could combine them. This blog is designed to help others focus on how to combing holistic treatments with traditional medicine in a safe and fun way.
