Glaucoma: What to Watch Out For

Denise Moore

If you are suffering from glaucoma, you are at a high risk of developing blindness. When the nerve damage occurs, the vision loss that results will be permanent. The key to preventing glaucoma from causing blindness is to identify glaucoma early on so that your eye doctor can then treat it. For this reason, you should be fully informed of the symptoms of glaucoma and the risk factors so you can schedule an appointment if you suspect glaucoma.

Risk Factors

Glaucoma is most likely to affect you as you get older, especially if you are over 40. If you have African or Hispanic ancestry or a family history of glaucoma, you will want to pay closer attention the symptoms of glaucoma. Also, if you have suffered an injury to the eyes, have suffered from severe anemia or have engaged in steroid use, you are at increased risk of suffering glaucoma.

Sensitivity to Lighting

Those who have glaucoma have a difficult time adjusting to dark rooms. Rather than having the pupil dilate, it can be difficult to see within the room. Also, when there is a bright light in the room, many individuals have a difficult time seeing due to the glare. After scheduling an appointment with your eye doctor, consider wearing sunglasses to provide yourself with short-term relief.

Your Eye's Appearance

The physical appearance of your eyes might change as a result of glaucoma. Your eyes might be red-rimmed, encrusted, and swollen. You may also notice a change in the color of your iris.

Vision Abnormalities

Many patients who suffer from glaucoma experience vision abnormalities such as double vision, dark spots in the center of one's vision, spots and ghostly images, and lines and edges that appear distorted. However, like with the other symptoms listed above, each of these warning signs could also be symptoms of other eye conditions. Most individuals experience spots in their vision at some point in their lives, for example.

More Serious Symptoms

The symptoms you experience can become more serious as the disease progresses. This includes sudden vision loss in one eye, blurred vision, flashes of light, and rainbows around lights. If you experience this, find someone to drive you to a nearby hospital for treatment. If you are not experiencing any of these emergency symptoms, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor. While these symptoms are not a guarantee that you have glaucoma, if it is glaucoma, you must catch it early. Contact an eye doctor at a business such as Coastal Eye Care if you'd like to know more about glaucoma.

About Me
Working Together: Holistic and Traditional Combinations That Work

I am one of those people who hates going to the doctor. In the past, I have relied on everything from cranberry juice to apple cider vinegar to fix my ails. As I get older though, I find that I need to rely more on traditional medicine than I did in the past. What I found out from my doctor is that I did not have to give up the holistic medicines I used. I could combine them. This blog is designed to help others focus on how to combing holistic treatments with traditional medicine in a safe and fun way.
