4 Ways To Limit Discomfort After Dental Implant Surgery

Following dental implant surgery, it can take 10 to 14 days for the surgical site to heal. During that time, you can experience some discomfort. To lessen the discomfort, here are some things you can do at home. 

Apply an Ice Pack

An ice pack or cold compress can help with reducing bruising and swelling. The cold can also alleviate pain and temporarily numb the area. You can apply the ice pack periodically throughout the day starting from day one. 

Any swelling that you experienced should be significantly reduced after a few days. At that point, you can switch to a warm compress to promote blood circulation. The flow of blood helps to provide nutrients throughout the areas that are necessary to sound healing. 

Eat Soft Foods

Your gums and jawbone need time to heal without any pressure being placed on them. Because of this, it is important that you avoid biting down into any hard foods. Eating foods such as mashed potatoes, oatmeal, and eggs does not place much pressure on your gums and jawbone. 

When eating, try to avoid chewing anything on the side with the surgical site if possible. Not only will avoiding that area avoid placing pressure on the site, but it will help you to avoid discomfort. 

Use Pain Medication

Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, are usually effective in treating the mild discomfort felt following dental implant surgery. You can not only use the pain relievers to stop pain, but also to prevent it. 

You can also request a prescription for a stronger pain reliever from your dental surgeon. If your pain does not start to lessen after the first few days or it worsens, contact your dental surgeon. There is a possibility that the area might be infected and require antibiotics. 

Lessen Physical Activity

Overexerting yourself immediately after the implant surgery can sometimes result in bleeding and discomfort. In the first few days, you should avoid not only exercising, but any activities that require you to bend over. Stick to minor physical activities and rest the remainder of the time. 

After the first few days have passed, you should be able to return to exercising without hindering the healing at the surgical site. 

Consult with your dental surgeon to learn of other ways you can promote healing at the surgical site following dental implant surgery. By working with your surgeon, you can help limit the discomfort and other symptoms that sometimes go with the procedure.
