Luckily, there are lifestyle changes that you can make that can help you prevent osteoporosis. It is never too late to make changes to keep yourself safe from the breaking down of your bones, so consider making these helpful lifestyle changes.

1. Start Eating a Healthier Diet

Making sure that you eat a healthy, complete diet is a good way to keep yourself safe from osteoporosis. You might have heard that it's essential to consume plenty of calcium if you want to prevent osteoporosis, and there are a few ways that you can do this. Drinking milk is an excellent option, but if you aren't a fan of milk or if you aren't able to digest dairy, consider drinking orange juice that has been supplemented with calcium or ask your doctor about a calcium supplement. It's also essential to ensure that you are getting plenty of protein and that you are eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.

2. Lose Extra Weight

If you are carrying around extra weight, you could be more at risk of breaks and fractures. Plus, being overweight or obese is associated with other health concerns as well. Consider making lifestyle changes to drop the extra weight, or talk to your doctor about setting up a good weight loss plan.

3. Stop Smoking and Drinking

Smoking and drinking aren't good for your health and can put you more at risk of osteoporosis. Keeping your alcohol consumption down to a moderate amount and working with your doctor to quit smoking can help reduce lots of health risks, including the risk of osteoporosis. If you are having trouble quitting smoking, you can talk to your doctor about good smoking cessation aids. For example, rather than quitting "cold turkey," you might find that using a nicotine patch or chewing on nicotine gum can help you quit.

Even though osteoporosis can happen to anyone, there are steps that you can take to help protect yourself. Since protecting your bones is important, especially as you age, it is worth your while to make lifestyle changes so that you can protect yourself. Luckily, following these three tips can help you keep yourself healthy and can help prevent osteoporosis as well as other potential health problems that you may otherwise have to worry about as you get older.
