Quick Weight Loss And Low Carb Diets

Denise Moore

Short term diets that place extreme restrictions on carbohydrate intake can be very effective for short term weight loss. Dieters can go even further with a ketogenic diet, which involves further dietary restrictions in pursuing a more rapid loss.

However, these diets may only be effective on a temporary basis for many individuals, who would either prefer a less restricted diet or have health problems that prohibit the diets on a long term basis.

How do low carb diets work?

Low carb diets force the body to burn fat as a substitute for blood sugar for the necessary fuel to operate on a daily basis. Both the body and the brain must have a constant supply of fuel at all times to remain functional.

Because the body cannot store sugar, but stores energy as fat, the fat is converted by the liver into ketones, which function as an alternate to blood sugar for immediate use by the body and brain. This process, known as ketosis, will continue to burn fat on a limited basis as long as carbohydrates are consumed at a minimum level.

How can this process be accelerated for additional weight loss?

Although carbohydrates are the primary source for maintaining an adequate blood sugar level, the body can also convert proteins into blood sugar. This leads dieters who seek rapid weight loss to advance to a ketogenic diet.

A ketogenic diet is specifically designed to produce the maximum level of ketosis, and severely restricts the intake of carbohydrates while also lowering the consumption of proteins as well.  The liver is then forced to use more fat in the production of ketones for daily use.

Thesustainability of low carb diets

The ability to maintain a long term low carb diet is based upon the individual diet, their overall health, and their relationship to food and eating.

Individuals who are more concerned with nutrition than eating for pleasure will have fewer problems adjusting to a low carb diet, while those who enjoy food for pleasure may be better suited for a balanced diet with smaller portions after their weight loss goals have been achieved through a limited low carb diet.

Those with psychological issues related to food as treatment for anxiety or depression may need counseling and medication rather than repeated weight loss and gain.

Those with health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure should consult a physician before embarking on any type of diet.

Diet and exercise: partners in weight loss

The body is remarkably efficient in its use of energy, and will slow its metabolic rate to compensate for a loss of calories, so exercise is an important component of any weight loss program. Keeping active will force the body to use energy at the same rate and keep the pounds off with any type of diet.

Exercise also produces endorphins, which are natural feel-good chemicals that will help you to put down that doughnut and pick up your spirit. Contact a weight loss service, like InShapeMD San Angelo, for more he

About Me
Working Together: Holistic and Traditional Combinations That Work

I am one of those people who hates going to the doctor. In the past, I have relied on everything from cranberry juice to apple cider vinegar to fix my ails. As I get older though, I find that I need to rely more on traditional medicine than I did in the past. What I found out from my doctor is that I did not have to give up the holistic medicines I used. I could combine them. This blog is designed to help others focus on how to combing holistic treatments with traditional medicine in a safe and fun way.
