2 Reasons For Weight Gain Unrelated To Caloric Intake

Utilizing the services of a weight management clinic can dramatically improve your health. The weight loss center counselors will recommend individualized weight loss plans that will help you shed unwanted pound easily and safely. Maintaining a healthy weight can help lower your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, joint pain, and even kidney disease. 

While nutritional counseling, calorie restrictive diets, and exercise are essential components to a healthy weight loss plan, there are other factors to take into consideration. Here are two reasons your weight loss counselor may give you for your weight gain other than your eating habits, and what you can do about them:

Medications

Your weight loss counselor will ask you questions about your medical history and current medications. After reviewing your answers, he or she will discuss the consequences, if any, your medications have on your weight loss goals. For example, medications known as beta blockers can sabotage your weight loss efforts because of their effects on your metabolism.

Beta blockers such as propranolol are used in the management of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, migraine headaches, tremor, and in some cases, anxiety and panic disorder.

Beta blockers slow down your heart rate and metabolic rate, and because of this, you may be unable to lose weight. Another side effect of beta blockers relating to weight loss is that they can cause exercise intolerance.

This means they can cause fatigue and muscle pain when you exert yourself. Because of this, you may be unable to exercise in order to burn calories. If your weight loss counselor believes that your medications are stalling your dieting efforts, he or she will refer you back to your physician who may lower your medication dosage or prescribe a different medication that is less likely to affect your metabolic rate. 

Hypothyroidism

Another reason for slow weight loss, or even weight gain, is hypothyroidism. This endocrine disorder refers to a low functioning thyroid, and in addition to difficulty losing weight, hypothyroidism can also cause dry skin, feeling as though you're cold all the time, hair loss, constipation, and fatigue.

If you have hypothyroidism and are unable to lose weight, talk to your endocrinologist. He or she may need to adjust your medication so that you will be able to shed unwanted pounds quicker. Being a hypothyroid patient can also cause extreme tiredness and drowsiness, and because of this, you may be unable to exercise. 

If you take beta blocker medications or have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, talk to your weight loss center counselor. He or she can adjust your menus and weight loss plans by adding extra protein to your meal plans, or by safely lowering your caloric intake.
